Variegated Alocasia Care Guide
There’s no single “one-size-fits-all” way to care for these beauties—but these are the methods that work best for us and help keep our Alocasias happy, healthy, and thriving. Think of this as a loving guideline, not a rulebook.
🌤 Light
Bright, consistent light is key for maintaining health and variegation.
-
14–16 hours per day
-
Grow lights are highly recommended
-
Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch variegated leaves
💦 Humidity
Alocasias love humidity, especially the little ones.
-
Pups: 85–90%
-
Teens & Mother Plants: 70–85%
High humidity helps with leaf development, root growth, and overall recovery.
🌡 Temperature
Warm and cozy is the goal.
-
78–82°F (25–28°C)
-
Avoid cold drafts or sudden temperature changes
🌱 Substrate
There’s no single “perfect” substrate—what matters most is choosing one that works with your care habits and environment.
Some great options include:
-
Stratum / Perlite
-
Coco Coir / Perlite
-
Tree Fern Fiber mix
-
Soil-based mixes
You can grow Alocasias in semi-hydro setups or in substrates that require watering every couple of days—both approaches can be successful when done mindfully.
✨ The key:
No matter which substrate you choose, always keep an eye on moisture levels and root health. Overly wet or overly dry conditions can quickly lead to stress or rot.
Healthy roots are the foundation of a happy Alocasia—adjust your watering and care as needed, and let the plant guide you.
🌱 Nutrient Mix
We recommend mixing nutrients in this order for best results
(Check out our affiliated links for our favorite products!)
-
Cal-Mag
-
Kelp / Seaweed Extract
-
Fertilizer
-
pH balance to 6.0
-
Beneficial Bacteria
✨ Tip: Flush the soil with clean water once every 3 months to prevent salt buildup.
🪴 Self-Watering Pots
If you’re using a self-watering setup:
-
Keep the water reservoir low
-
The plant should fully drink the water within 1–3 days
-
Standing water for too long can lead to root rot
Happy roots = happy plant!
🌿 Care After Shipping
Your plant just went on a journey—let’s help it settle in gently.
-
If the soil arrives moist or wet, do not water the same day
-
Place the plant in a warm, humid space (80%+) with plenty of light. You can put the plant under a dome or in prop box initially to speed up the recovery process
-
Allow it to rest and recover on its own
-
Give a small sip of water the next day, if needed
-
Wait at least 7 days before repotting
🪴 Important Note on Substrate:
If your plant arrives in stratum/perlite or coco coir, it has water roots. Repotting into soil or another medium requires an adjustment period. During this time, you may notice:
-
Yellowing leaves
-
Leaf drop
-
Stressed or shedding roots
This is completely normal. With patience and proper care, your plant will bounce back beautifully.
🐞 Pests & Quarantine
We use beneficial mites as a preventative measure, but we always recommend quarantining new plants before introducing them to your collection—just to be safe.
Give them warmth, humidity, light, and a little grace—and they’ll reward you with stunning growth ✨🪴
